Polar Lands Flora and Faunain Polar Lands such as Antarctica or the Arctic, in higher altitude places. small plants such as mosses, lichens, grasses and dwarf trees grow during a short period in the year. In summer, the ground on the tundra thaws only on the surface but the soil under it is permanently frozen. That is called permafrost and can be at least 400 m deep.
