The Burrowing Owl
The Burrowing Owl is a species that has remarkably well adapts to the prairie environment. The Burrowing owl lives in gopher, prairie dog, fox, coyote and badger holes. The burrowing owl typically eats insects, snakes, frogs and beetles during the day and eat mice, voles and other small mammals during the night.
These owls hunt within a 250m radius of their burrow during the day and up to 3kms during the night. They try to restrict their hunting to morning and evening. The burrowing owl population is slowly decreasing and that's due to the habitat loss. Most of the Prairie habitat is considered as prime agricultural land. So this means only 20% of the former prairie remains untouched. |
